Dear Future Family

Hello, dear friends.

It's me again, Paul, your Chief Affection Officer and comfort cat. I'm also a sunbeam chaser. I’m writing from my usual spot: the soft blanket on my desk, under the window where birds play their morning songs. Spring is here! Squirrels are back to their curious ways. The warm weather brings something special…

Hope.

I see it daily at the shelter. It's in the eyes of newcomers and the caring hands of caregivers. It’s also in the tail wags and soft purrs of animals waiting for their “forever.” Waiting can be hard. Yet, for many, the toughest part is learning to hope again. The brave friends I want to tell you about today? They’ve done just that.

So I’ve helped them write letters – real, honest, heart-full letters – to the families they dream about. Some are playful, some are shy, some have flourished here, and some are just starting to bloom. But every single one of them is ready to write their next chapter with someone who loves them back.

Here are their stories, in their own words and a few gentle observations from me along the way.

Dear Future Family,

My name is Hugh. I'm about three years old, give or take a game of fetch. I'm a terrier mix, but I like to see myself as a joy machine.

When I’m in full tail-wag mode (which is often), I can hardly contain myself. I’ve got energy to spare and a spirit that just wants to play. Hand me a rope toy or a squeaky ball, and I’ll entertain you! I might even chase my shadow, thinking it’s a secret sport I need to learn.

But beyond the wiggles and zoomies, there’s another side to me too…a loyal heart that beats just for you. I’m the kind of dog who will notice when you’ve had a hard day, press my head against your leg, and just be there. I believe in showing up for the people I love, every day, no matter what.

I would do best in a home without young kids, not because I don’t like them, but because I get a little too excited sometimes. I want to be my best self, and having calm grown-up energy around me helps with that.

Hoping to meet you soon, Hugh

Paul’s Note: Hugh has what I call “tennis ball energy” — always bouncing, always bright. I admire how he turns even the simplest moment into something joyful. He makes me tired just watching him… but in the best way.

Dear Future Family,

Hi there! I’m Brisket. Yes, like the food. And just like that delicious dish, I’m warm, comforting, and very hard to resist.

I'm just a year old, but I've learned what I'm good at. I make friends easily, fetch squeaky toys, and enjoy learning new things. I’m the kind of dog who greets each day like it’s a birthday party and every person like they’re the guest of honor. My tail never stops wagging, and my heart is wide open.

I’ve heard I’m smart. I learn new commands fast, especially with treats. So, always have treats ready! I would love a family who’s ready to teach me new tricks, go on adventures, and give me the love I’m so ready to give in return.

No matter if you’ve had dogs before or if you’re new to having one, I promise to make you smile every day.

Let’s grow up together, Brisket

Paul’s Note: Brisket is one of those dogs who manages to brighten the entire building just by walking through it. His joy is infectious, and I say that as someone who values quiet naps above all else.

Dear Future Family,

My name is Duchess, and I’m writing this from the coziest blanket I could find. At four, I love simple joys. Warm sunbeams feel nice. I relax on the windowsill. I also enjoy the flick-flick of a laser pointer on the floor.

I currently have a little room of my own here at the shelter, a safe haven while I wait. And don’t get me wrong, it’s quite nice. I have wonderful caregivers, daily cuddles, and even some high-quality snacks. But still…it’s not home. Not yet.

What I dream of most is a quiet, cozy space with a person of my very own. I’m a social eater. I enjoy dining with good company. A few head scritches and kind words really whet my appetite. I’m also on a special urinary diet because stress affects me more than most. But if I’m in a calm environment where I feel safe and loved, things stay beautifully balanced.

Hoping you’ll be my person, Duchess

Paul’s Note: Duchess and I share a love of solitude with just the right amount of company. She’s elegant without being fussy, affectionate without being demanding. A true kindred spirit.

Dear Future Family,

My name is Lyric, and I am, in all honesty…a little shy. Don’t confuse my quietness with indifference. I feel deeply but express my emotions softly.

At four years old, I’ve become a bit of a master at finding the coziest corners. I like observing the world from a safe distance and taking my time to warm up. If you’ve ever been the kind of person who sits quietly until a cat chooses you, I think we might be meant for each other.

I don’t need constant attention or grand gestures. Just your patience, your kindness, and the gentle knowledge that you’re there. When I feel safe, I show my love in subtle ways: a slow blink, a soft nudge, the brave step closer. And once I trust you, I’ll never stop trusting you.

With quiet hope, Lyric

Paul’s Note: Lyric is a poet at heart. I often see him tucked in the corners of the room, watching with the kind of stillness that makes the world slow down. He doesn’t shout for love, he waits for it. And that’s a kind of magic all its own.

Dear Future Family,

Hello! I’m William, your future favorite bunny. I’m two years old, full of curiosity, and ready to bounce into your life with a wiggle of my nose and a heart full of joy.

I love to explore. Give me a few hidey holes, a tunnel or two, and a blanket fort and I’ll turn it into my own little wonderland. When I’m really excited, I do these wonderful hops called binkies. (If you’ve never seen a bunny mid-binky, prepare your heart, it’s almost too cute to handle.)

But I’m not just a performer. I also love quiet companionship, a gentle pet behind the ears, and a peaceful moment side by side. I bring sweetness everywhere I go, and I’d be honored to bring it to your home, too.

Binkies and nose boops, William

Paul’s Note: William once tried to climb into my stroller. I respect his hustle. He’s always charming and surprisingly wise. Think of him as a furry philosopher with floppy ears.

Here it is. Five letters from five amazing animals. They all gaze at the world and ask, "Is it you?"

If one of these hearts has spoken to yours, don’t wait. Come visit, come meet them, come feel the joy that happens when an animal realizes they’ve found home.

I’ll be here waiting too, offering a purr, a head bump, and a reminder that every life you change changes you right back.

With all the love and whiskers in the world, Paul Chief Affection Officer
